Mornings with Elio are a pretty special time. I usually get up with him most mornings (though Guy took these pictures earlier this week when he got up with him), after a few minutes of him reading "quietly" to himself in bed. We come out to the kitchen to make "TEA!", which Elio always warns me will be "hot!" While we wait for the water to boil, sometimes we snuggle on the couch and read more books. Or play with the choo-choo train set up on the coffee table. Usually Elio will pull up the blind on the right-hand window to see if the sun is coming up yet. If so, he usually yells, "bwight!" and covers his eyes. Then we make tea: I make earl grey for me and then pour some hot water into E's elephant mug, add some honey and milk. We always have to take our tea over to the coffee table and sit on the floor together, often toasting each other a half-dozen times, like an elaborate Japanese tea ceremony (though not as somber).

Then sometimes we do puzzles, or Elio plays with his giant Legos, building fantastical structures. Or sometimes we play silly games like, "Elio, what's better--a bus or a fire truck? A garbage truck or a bus?" Right now, "BUSTH!" is always the winner. After tea, we make breakfast--oatmeal or toast with peanut butter or a waffle or some cream of wheat. Cold cereal with raisins is always a big hit, I think it makes him feel like a big boy. Usually, I have NPR on quietly in the background. Then, a little before 8, it's time to wake up Daddy and snuggle in bed with him. It's a good routine.
