The Tough Questions
Tonight, as we were driving over to some friends for dinner, Elio overheard Guy and me talking about Rod Blagojevich, and immediately demanded, "What are you talking about, Mommy?" I tried to explain that he was a man who was in all the newspapers because he had done something very wrong. "What did he do wrong, Mommy?" Hmm. How to explain to a two and a half year old about a governor who had tried to sell a Senate seat because Barack Obama was vacating it to be President? The best I could come up with was that he tried to sell a chair that didn't belong to him and that was wrong. Of course, Elio totally latched on to this idea, of a man doing something wrong and getting in trouble for it (this is a concept he can relate to, unfortunately, nowadays!). The whys and whats went on all the way to our friends. Then we got there, and the whole thing was immediately forgotten in the face of a friend and new toys and cookies. But as soon as we got back in the car and started driving home, Elio piped up, "Why did that man do that wrong thing, Mommy?"
