The Greatest

When I went back to work, Elio was 3 months old. Guy and I sort of thought that he would stay home with Elio for about 6 months and then we would feel ready to put him in day care. Guy has now been home with Elio for almost 22 months. This week, we learned that Elio will be able to start at a lovely day care in September, a place where he will be one of 11 two-year-olds in a huge room that has a nice outdoor area attached to it. A place where everyone seems so friendly and kind, and where there will be three caregivers for those 11 very short people. We’re excited.

And yet. It will be such an adjustment to have Elio spend the lion’s share of his days with someone other than Guy.

No offense to all the other dads out there, but Guy is the greatest dad ever. He just is.

He is fun. He is playful. He is kind. He is creative and imaginative. He is gentle and he can be rough and tumble. And most of all, he is patient, which is such an important thing, it turns out, when you have a 2-year-old boy. No, actually, most of all, he just loves Elio with all his heart and lets him know it every day, with kisses and hugs and encouragement and jokes and time and attention. I am so lucky to be married to this man who so unabashedly shows the love and joy he has for his child. And Elio is so, so very lucky to have Guy as his dad. Happy Father’s Day, love.
