Revisiting the Thanksgiving Scene

Before we get too caught up with Christmas, let's cast one eye back toward Thanksgiving. Because it was great. How can it not be, when it kicks off with getting to hold a not even week-old babe? On the way out to Long Valley, we (the three of us plus superstar cousins Adam and Andrew) stopped to see Jason, Jen, and the main attraction, Luke. A delightful, sleeping, shnuffling, funny-face-making morsel, all swaddled up. The first time Guy held Luke, Elio threw a fit, but the longer we spent with the little one, the less possessive he was.

And then on to Uncle Anthony and Aunt Karen's, where there was eating, lots of eating. Plus amazing home-pressed grape juice and apple cider. A heritage breed turkey. Buttercup squash and cider soup. The classic sausage stuffing. Mashed potatoes. Sweet potatoes baked with apples. The brussels sprouts slaw that we brought. Fluffy yeast rolls. It was a veritable Slow Food feast.

And Elio was reunited with his cousin Ailsa. And it was joyous.

Andrew and Cami realized that their era of being the most-photographed cousins had come to an end. They commiserated over grape juice.

Ailsa and Elio took over the head of the table. Until they followed in the footsteps of generations before them and hung out under the table while the adults talked.

The next day, we trooped over to Aunt Kathy and Uncle Bobby's, where Erinn had made vast quantities of pizza dough and we, as usual, pigged out.

Ailsa and Elio inspected their new cousin a little more closely. And decided he was all right.

It was a big weekend. No wonder Elio just wanted to kick back in his sweats by the end of it.
