In any case, our first event was the Chili and Pie Cookoff at the Church of the Latter Day Saints, a place I bet you'd never think to find Guy and me. Our neighbors, Tom and Alysha, invited us. They have a son, Luke, who is just three months older than Elio. We had a great time, the chili was delicious, there was music, Elio discovered candy corn. Here are the boys:
And here's Elio trying to sneak a taste of one of the pies. Alysha's pies were delicious, especially the chocolate pecan.
Elio got a little wild in the end, so out of the lederhosen and into the PJs he went. Here we are with Tom and Luke pointing out noses.
The next day, our friends Ryan and Rebecca came over to go with us to the Halloween celebration at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I had been excited about this for months, ever since I first heard about it. But was Elio interested in partaking of the music, the crafts, the other kids? No.
He totally forged his own path that day. Leading us down stairs.
Through secret gardens.
To the contemplative Japanese pond and its giant koi.
Still contemplating.
And upwards to a little temple shrine I've never seen before that had two little stone dogs that were the perfect place for high-fiving.
We walked until the late afternoon sun drew out our shadows and the chill wind drove us home. We didn't join into the kids parade. And it was just fine.
On Halloween proper, we again opted out of the parade (the big one down 7th Avenue) and instead took Elio trick-or-treating up and down a few nearby blocks. It was the right call. He quickly figured out how to take a piece of candy from the offered bowl and drop it into our bag. Unfortunately, we didn't teach him how to weed out the good candy from the bad. In a couple of instances, he bypassed a full-sized Reese's Cup (the mother lode!) for a Dum-Dum. Oh well, we have time.
